What it does

Bold Penguin is a Columbus, Ohio-based commercial-lines distribution platform founded in 2016 by a team of insurers and agents who had worked with Allstate, Nationwide, and Progressive. Acquired by American Family Insurance in February 2021, Bold Penguin remains operationally independent as an open-market exchange.

Core product and network. Bold Penguin Terminal is a unified quoting and binding interface for independent agents and brokers. On the send side, agents submit a single application to reach 40+ integrated carriers and MGAs; on the receive side, carriers route capacity and rules through APIs. Named integrations include Hiscox, Nationwide, Pie Insurance, and a roster of specialty MGAs expanded via the October 2025 acquisition of SquareRisk (a digital specialty marketplace covering 45+ carriers).

Technology footprint. Bold Penguin employs a network of AI agents that extract, enrich, score, and route commercial submissions automatically—from prospecting through bind—without human intervention in nominal cases. SubmissionLink extracts and structures inbound submission documents (loss runs, schedules of values, broker forms) at claimed 85% accuracy; ClauseLink performs clause extraction for coverage analysis. Carrier partners cite ~90% underwriting automation on complex submissions and approximately 3% cost savings from improved data accuracy.

Traction and ownership. $50M+ raised in venture funding pre-acquisition, with Series B of $32M in 2019 led by Hudson Structured Capital Management, Lightstone, and Guggenheim Insurance. After acquiring Insureon's tech platform with Hub International in 2022, Bold Penguin owns distribution technology spanning personal (Insureon), small commercial (Terminal), and specialty (SquareRisk) segments. American Family's ownership has not altered the exchange's neutrality claim, though the parent now appears as both carrier and owner.

Lines and limitations. Publicly documented coverage includes commercial general liability, property, commercial auto, workers' comp, management liability, and specialty lines via SquareRisk. Extraction accuracy caps at 85% per company data; edge cases and complex underwriting still route to carrier underwriters.

Named deployments

Known limitations

  • Bold Penguin's SubmissionLink achieves 85% accuracy on extracted submission data per company claims; complex submissions still require adjuster oversight and secondary validation workflows. (Bold Penguin)
